Our Services

Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting sounds, even though hearing sensitivity may be normal. At Sense of Hearing, we provide specialized APD assessments for both children and adults using a comprehensive battery of tests designed to evaluate how the auditory system processes speech and other sounds. Our audiologists work closely with patients, families, educators, and other professionals to develop management strategies that may include auditory training, environmental modifications, assistive listening devices, and communication strategies. Early identification and intervention are key to helping individuals with APD succeed in school, work, and daily life.

Common Questions

Auditory Processing Disorder FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions about our auditory processing disorder services.

With hearing loss, the ears have difficulty detecting sounds. With APD, the ears detect sounds normally, but the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting the information. A person with APD may pass a standard hearing test but still struggle to understand speech, especially in noisy environments.

APD testing is typically conducted from age 7 and up, as the auditory system needs to be sufficiently mature for reliable results. However, if you have concerns about a younger child, we can discuss screening options and monitoring strategies.

While APD cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed. Strategies include auditory training exercises, environmental modifications, assistive listening devices, and communication strategies that help individuals compensate for processing difficulties.

A full APD assessment typically takes 2 to 3 hours, including the initial hearing test. The appointment may be split into two sessions depending on the patient's age and attention span.
