Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition where the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting sounds, even though hearing sensitivity may be normal. At Sense of Hearing, we provide specialized APD assessments for both children and adults using a comprehensive battery of tests designed to evaluate how the auditory system processes speech and other sounds. Our audiologists work closely with patients, families, educators, and other professionals to develop management strategies that may include auditory training, environmental modifications, assistive listening devices, and communication strategies. Early identification and intervention are key to helping individuals with APD succeed in school, work, and daily life.

How It Works
Our straightforward process ensures you receive personalized care at every step.
Discuss your concerns, symptoms, and history with your audiologist to determine if APD testing is appropriate.
A standard hearing test is conducted first to rule out hearing loss as a contributing factor.
A series of specialized tests evaluate how your auditory system processes speech in noise, competing signals, and degraded speech.
Your audiologist explains the findings and provides a detailed management plan with practical strategies and recommendations.
What We Offer
We use a comprehensive test battery specifically designed to evaluate auditory processing abilities beyond standard hearing tests.
Our APD assessments are available for both children (typically age 7 and up) and adults who suspect auditory processing difficulties.
Receive a comprehensive report outlining your results, diagnosis, and specific recommendations for management and support.
Personalized recommendations including auditory training exercises, classroom accommodations, and communication strategies.
We work with teachers, speech-language pathologists, and other professionals to create a coordinated support plan.
Regular re-assessments to track progress and adjust strategies as needed over time.

Common Questions
Answers to frequently asked questions about our auditory processing disorder services.
With hearing loss, the ears have difficulty detecting sounds. With APD, the ears detect sounds normally, but the brain has difficulty processing and interpreting the information. A person with APD may pass a standard hearing test but still struggle to understand speech, especially in noisy environments.
APD testing is typically conducted from age 7 and up, as the auditory system needs to be sufficiently mature for reliable results. However, if you have concerns about a younger child, we can discuss screening options and monitoring strategies.
While APD cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed. Strategies include auditory training exercises, environmental modifications, assistive listening devices, and communication strategies that help individuals compensate for processing difficulties.
A full APD assessment typically takes 2 to 3 hours, including the initial hearing test. The appointment may be split into two sessions depending on the patient's age and attention span.
